About the event
Days Fri, Tue Duration 12 hours Main region Fethiye Organizer Excursion Mania

The Pamukkale tour from Fethiye is a day packed with sights and feeling. On this trip you will see several wonders of the world at once, bathe in a natural thermal spring and feel the rejuvenating effect of Cleopatra’s Pool. Pamukkale means snow-white travertines, cedar forests and the remarkable remains of an amphitheatre that still carries marble decoration and reliefs from the days of the Roman Empire.

The cotton castle, the travertines and the other wonders of Pamukkale

The journey begins early in the morning, leaving Fethiye by coach with a guide for Pamukkale. On the way you can admire the orange groves and the unhurried life of Turkish villages. Plenty more is ahead. Our first stop is the area around the city of Denizli and the natural travertine springs, descending from the mountains in a beautiful cascade like lava of hardened minerals. The thermal springs here are a million years old.

The Pamukkale tour will stay with you for:

  • the gripping story of how the travertines came to be;
  • the chance to bathe in a thermal spring;
  • a photo session against the striking white terraces;
  • a relaxing soak in the radon waters of Cleopatra’s Pool.

Turkish nature made this wonder unaided — a cotton castle of white drifts and flowing water. The purest thermal springs (+36°C) welcome visitors all year round. Cleopatra’s Pool is another emblematic spot and simply a beautiful corner of Turkey. Step into it and you will feel the charge of energy and the powerful rejuvenating effect of its water.

After an unhurried swim we have lunch at a local restaurant and try more Turkish dishes. Anyone who wants to take a keepsake home can visit the well-known textile shop in Denizli and pick something out.

Hierapolis — a beautiful legacy of antiquity

Next we visit the acknowledged treasure of Pamukkale, the ancient city of Hierapolis. Built in the second century BC as a thermal spa, its ruins now stretch for 2 km and impress with their scale and enduring strength. Walking through the ancient city you will see the remains of market rows and whole streets, and learn why the rulers of the day were so fond of the Roman baths and what performances they watched in the theatre.

The programme covers the ancient tombs, the columns and the paved street of the Agora, the Temple of Pluto and the Basilica of St Philip. You will also see the remains of the Byzantine gates and of fountains that flowed from underground several thousand years ago. The amphitheatre is another jewel of the place: its many tiers hold up to 12,000 people. You can sit in the royal box, feel the atmosphere, imagine the calls of ancient orators and the roar of the stands, and touch the past for a moment.
